x-3<2x+5<10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to solve numberline and solution set

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

I can help you out

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

x-3<2x+5<10 STEP ONE: Recognize that the expression between the two inequality symbols is the expression on ONE side of the equation. then recognize that "x-3" and "10" are the expression on the other side of the equation. Also, recognize that this is two different quastions that we will solve as one equation.

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

You two equations are : x-3<2x+5 and 2x+5<10

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

I assume that you know how to work each of these individually. Is this correct?

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

I'll show you the frist step to sovle to see if you get where Im going

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

x-3<2x+5<10 -5 -5 -5 -------------- x -8<2x <5 IS THE SAME AS x-3<2x+5 -5 -5 ---------- x -8<2x OR IS THE SAME AS: 2x+5<10 -5 -5 -------------- 2x <5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got x>-8 and for other inequality x<-5/2

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

|dw:1349034597874:dw|That got a little weird on screen...

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

Ok, let me check

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes I see it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my fault 5/2*

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

x-3<2x+5<10 -5 -5 -5 -------------- x -8<2x <5 x -8< 2x and 2x <5 -1x -1x -- -- ---- ---- 2 2 -8<x and x < 5/2 SO, -8<x<5/2

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

and you are right

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

|dw:1349034844084:dw|

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

|dw:1349034889203:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so could you help me with the number line and solution set Will ss be {5/2,-8}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oo thanks

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

set builder: {x| -8<x<5/2}

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

interval notation: because there are no equal to signs then, we use parenthesis for both: (-8, 5/2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oo thanks and for nuumberline its two open circles right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you have tremendously helped alot thanks man! :D not much people take there precious time to help others but thanks bro.

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

{5/2,-8} means that x equal 5/2 OR -8 and nothing else. {x| -8<x<5/2} mean sthat x is anything between -8 and 2.5

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

partenthesis means open circles

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

anytime you see {___?___} just know that you will see a list of exact answers like 5 or 5,6, & 7....and not a between answer like (5,7) which means 5 througyh 7

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

those are braces used only for exacts

OpenStudy (jwheele1):

(?,?) means between and ( means the number glued to it not included in your answer but a [ means it IS included. so for (-8, 5/2) .....-8 is not included but -7.99999999999 is. ok im done, lol
