Question

always confused about tense agreement in a sentence in past tense:
e.g.) I did not know how far these two buildings ARE from each other when we were dividing the tutorials based on our schedule and needs.

These two buildings still exist but I am talking about a time in the past. Should I say "are" or "were" in this case?
