. In the band, there are 25 flute players, 15 clarinet players and 7 saxophone players. What is the ratio of clarinet players to the total band members? A. 47 : 15 B. 15 : 47 C. 15 to 25 D. 7 to 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15:47

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ clarinets }{ total } = \frac{ 15 }{ 25 + 15 + 7 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i always get side tracked with the dividing and other steps required

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes... just pay attention to the direction of the ratio... answer A is designed to try to fool you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you don't have to divide here... just add clarinets:total ----> 15:(15+25+7) --->>>> 15:47

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you both of you:) life savers i know they were trying to trick me thats why i asked for help ! :) there good at fooling with look alike answers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's your challenge... be smart enough to spot the "trap" answers and get it right! Glad to help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are 98 students in 8 homeroom classes. What is the ratio of students to classes? A. 8 : 98 B. 106 to 98 C. 90 to 8 D. 49 : 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on i wanna try to figure it out first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right... Perfect attitude :) you got this!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops :( You stepped in the trap... check the order... is the order of answer a the same as "students : classes" ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe i might of confuseed my self again lol . ill figure it out :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hint: a ratio can be simplified like fractions can be simplified... the answer may not have the numbers 98 and 8 in it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I thought too until I looked at the problem again and... JakeV8 told me too :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the ratio of 5:10 is equivalent to the ratio 1:2, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, first step, get the order of the ratio correct. Second step, reduce if necessary to find an equivalent ratio.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes being simplified.?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to simplify right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D is simplified

OpenStudy (anonymous):

students : classes 98 : 8 49 : 4 Answer D :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah:)
