The other answers didn't make much sense. The Muslims didn't ruin the land or crops when they invaded because they would need those resources. Christians did flee, but many also remained behind and they weren't all killed in the conquest. Certain restrictions were placed on how they lived, such as being taxed as non-believers under the Umayyads, but there was no wholesale slaughter.
