You are supposed to find the area of that figure. You can think of that as a paper (rectangle) with a small rectangle cut out of it. Then, you can subtract the area of the small rectangle from the area of the big one. See the trick?

|dw:1349226073951:dw| find the area of each side given, then add them together. to find the missing measurement you look at the opposite side (which is 4) and notice that the missing measurement is half the size of 4, so its 2. add all of the measurements together
