What's the difference between INTERNAL and EXTERNAL direct sums?

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

An internal direct sum is simply a direct sum of sub-objects of an object. By contrast, a direct sum of two objects which are not sub-objects of a common object is an external direct sum.
