comparison continuous and discontinuous variation

OpenStudy (blues):

Discontinuous variation occurs when values can only take discrete (usually integer) values. For example, if you were doing a study of traffic patterns and wanted to know how many cars go through a particular junction in an hour, you might count 10 cars or 11 cars, but not 10.5 cars. The variable "cars" would be discontinuous. But if you were sitting at the same intersection and approached your study measuring the time elapsed between each car, the variable "time" would be continuous.
