The variations would be the repetitions of the theme that are changed slightly (Such as perhaps being moved up or down an octave)

the theme is the first part of the "story" that is played. once that basic story is played. the story is played differently throughout the piece to convey different moods. Maybe it will be easier to understand with a more familiar piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO-ecxHEPqI
