Multiply everything in the parentheses by -4.
OpenStudy (mariebrittany07):
i did got 8- -12=20 how do you get it to equal -9
OpenStudy (anonymous):
When you distribute the -4 you should get:
8x+12=-9
A negative times a negative= a positive
OpenStudy (mariebrittany07):
right eight is positive but -4*3=20
OpenStudy (anonymous):

do i make the 3 neg
OpenStudy (anonymous):
The 3 is already negative. just multiply everything inside the parentheses by -4 and you get 8x+12=-9
OpenStudy (mariebrittany07):
i did
OpenStudy (mariebrittany07):
-4(-2x - 3)=-9
(-4)(-2x)-(-4)(3)=-9

i dont get what i did wrong
OpenStudy (anonymous):
How did you get -4 on the right? we havent done anything to that.
When you distrbute, you multiply the number outside times the terms inside individually.
-4(-2x-3)=-9
-4*-2x=8x
-4*-3=12
8x+12=-9
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Then subtract the 12 from both sides:
8x=-21
divide by 8
x=-21/8
OpenStudy (mariebrittany07):
ok
OpenStudy (mariebrittany07):
2.625 as answer
