ok so say your number is 12345
to convert to scientific notation we want only one digit before the decimal place
like 1.2345..... ; but to do this we had to divide by 10000 which effectively moved the decimal point four places to the left
to keep the numbers equal we have to multiply by 10000 which is the same as 10^4
so we get
\[12345=1.2345\times10^4\]
