Okay. It looks like we're learning the difference between "ser" and "estar." Let me show how to fill in these kinds of sentences, so that you'll be familiar with them in the future. Let's begin by translating the directions, and the sentence. DIRECTIONS: "Escribe la forma correcta de ser o estar en la siguente oración." "Write the correct form of "ser" or "estar" in the following sentence. SENTENCE: "La chica _____ muy seria." "The girl ______ very serious. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There are two ways to say "to be" in Spanish: 1. Ser 2. Estar And our job is to pick the right one to use, in this sentence. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So, let's talk about when to use each one. SER is used when we're talking about.... permanent traits, personality, descriptions, where someone is from, and the time of day. | ESTAR is used when we're talking about..... location, emotions and feelings, and other temporary states. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So, let's look at the sentence again: La chica ________ muy seria. It means, "The girl ______ very serious." We should use "ser" here. Because we're talking about a personality trait: seriousness. And personality traits tend to be, more or less, permanent (according to the Spanish language.) But now, we have to use the correct form of the verb "ser." So, let's conjugate it: (Yo) Soy (Tú) Eres (Él/Ella/Usted) Es (Nosotros) Somos (Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes) Son Since we're talking about "the girl," we're talking about another, singular person. So, we should use the "ella" form of the verb "ser." And now, we have.... "La chica ES muy seria." It means, "The girl IS very serious."
