Jim spent 200$ on gifts for his family. He spent the money on toys, clothes, and a 15$ DVD. He spent 4 times as much on clothes as he did on toys. Write an equation with one variable that can be used to determine how much money Jim spent on toys.

He spent 200 dollars, but you know that 15 dollars went to a dvd, so you can just consider 185 dollars. Since the amount spent on toys, x, was one fourth of the amount spent on clothes, 4x. you can write the equation as\[4x+x=185\]or\[5x=185\]Divide both sides by five\[x=\frac{ 185 }{ 5 }=37\]

x is the amount spent on toys, remember
