Does the anthropic principle allow for such things as the technological singularity? ie. technology advances to a stage of consciousness where it can attempt to under the universe and its origins?

*Understand

OpenStudy (egenriether):

My understanding of the Anthropic Principle is that it makes no sense to talk about why we ended up in a universe that allows for intelligent life because we are here to wonder about it in the first place. If our universal laws did not allow for such things we wouldn't be here to wonder why not. That being said, the anthropic principle is the only reason we are here on this forum discussing these things. There aren't being existing in universes that don't allow the internet to exist discussing that fact on the internet because it wouldn't exist! So in my opinion anything we do is possible because the universe must have allowed it. Since we are currently trying to understand the universe, I would say "Yes".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Probably not. If the singularity were possible (the argument would go), then it would have already happened sometime in the last 13 billion years of the Universe's existence -- if not to us, then to some other intelligence species -- and we would not be here talking about it as a future possibility. That, at least, seems to me to be the appropriate generalization of the anthropic principle.

OpenStudy (egenriether):

I would respectfully disagree. Saying that is tantamount to saying that because we do not currently have a theory of everything we never will. Also if another, more advanced civilization had reached the singularity we would not know, as we have never been in contact with any alien civilizations. Thus we can only guess if they have, but even if they have not, they still could. Not having done something does not indicate an impossibility to do so, even within the scope of the anthropic principle.
