How do I write a good thesis statement?

Condense all of your thoughts into one sentence, that you can expand upon. If you were writing a thesis statement about openstudy, you might say "OpenStudy is a useful and vital resource for students because it provides community as well as academic assistance." You would then go on to write your essay about how and why openstudy does those things, and 
"prove" that your thesis statement is correct. 
It's basically just saying the point of your essay. If the point of your essay was that cupcakes are delicious you would say "Cupcakes are delicious because they are sweet and have a superior frosting to cake ratio to standard sized cakes." and then you would prove that in your essay.
