How does writing equivalent equations help you solve a system of equations?

If you have x+y = 10 2x+2y = 30 you can simplify the second equation to get 2x+2y=30 2(x+y)=30 x+y = 30/2 x+y = 15 ---------------------------------------------------- This would mean x+y = 10 2x+2y = 30 becomes x+y = 10 x+y = 15

So we can see that there are no solutions (since x+y adds up to two completely different numbers..which is impossible)
