MIT 6.189 A Gentle Introduction to Programming Using Python (OCW) 8 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

How many people are ready for this MOOC course to get started already? I'm ready to do this!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't wait!

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

which course

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Python?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A Gentle Introduction to Python - http://mechanicalmooc.org/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

someone participates in ICPC?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And ... what is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

International College Programming Challenge

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for the suggestion! Will look that up. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

International College Programming Contest*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is really a amazing contest to programmers but cant participate with python language

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm good to go!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

me too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am. Still a bit confused about how its all going to work to be honest, but I am excited.

OpenStudy (kymber):

\(\Huge\color{maroon}{\mathsf{Y}}\)\(\Huge\color{red}{\mathsf{E}}\)\(\Huge\color{orange}{\mathsf{A}}\)\(\Huge\color{yellow}{\mathsf{H}}\) \(\Huge\color{lime}{\mathsf{B}}\)\(\Huge\color{limegreen}{\mathsf{U}}\)\(\Huge\color{teal}{\mathsf{D}}\)\(\Huge\color{turquoise}{\mathsf{D}}\)\(\Huge\color{cyan}{\mathsf{Y}}\)\(\Huge\color{purple}{\mathsf{!}}\) I'm so excited guise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am not very excited about it because I already can program some Java and Javascript and CSS and HTML5 and I know a lot of Math but still there is no long line of potential Employers banging on my door begging to pay me for working for them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused how does this all work? We just do it by our selves? They give us instructions and we do it? No communication besides this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi all, yes, we'll start sending out e-mails on the 15 that point to specific readings, videos and exercises. But all the materials are openly available, so if you are ready to go feel free to start working. The first units on Codecademy, the first video for 6.00SC on MIT OpenCourseWare ( http://bit.ly/JUu9oJ) and the first chapter of the text ( http://www.greenteapress.com/thinkpython/thinkCSpy/html/chap01.html) are all good places to start.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We have about 5,300 people signed up to the mailing list for the course, by the way, so should be a great group!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm totally psyched!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm ready!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

After all the e-mails, I still am lost about how it's going to work, though. :O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahaanomegas: At it's most basic, starting next week, you'll get an e-mail a week that says: Read Chapter X in the text, watch this Video Y from 6.00SC on MIT OCW, do unit Z on the Codecademy exercises, do assignment Q from 6.189 on MIT OCW. If you get stuck or have trouble, come here to OpenStudy and ask for help. If you are assigned to an e-mail group of a dozen students, you can also e-mail them for help. Make sense? After 8 weeks, you'll have completed the course.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for the clarification, though I was thoroughly prepared to fly by the seat of my pants on this. I've tried a lot of different ways to learn to program on my own and I've never felt as engaged as I do with this. I'm excited!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh only 8 weeks. I was hoping it was longer. Will there be a continuation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@MOOC-E I appreciate the lengthy response. I fully understand now! One more question, though (forgive me for my ignorance): which ... textbook?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cool I didn't know it started next week. I preparation I have purchased copies of Knuth volumes 1 and 2, which I wish I'd had a few decades ago - read the very beginning of Volume 1 this week and it seems to make some programming issues much clearer. Unfortunately it costs about $35 to get a copy, I wanted to have a PDF but I don't see any available - Addison-Wesley has the copyright. I'm not sure how much time I"ll be able to put into the course, I hope I'll finish it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm Ready!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@anastaciagray You can roll right into 6.00 either on your own, or as part of the MITx course in the Spring. We'll cover the videos for Unit 1 of 6.00 in our course, so you be part way though already!

OpenStudy (strangefyr):

#mMooc: I had hoped there would be assignments first thing this morning....is there a certain time of day we can expect to get updates on coursework/assignments, etc? i feel like i must have missed something today since I only got the msg about how many people have signed up and nothing else ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@strangefyr You're doing better than me. I haven't gotten any emails today so I must really be behind the curve.

OpenStudy (strangefyr):

oh hey if it helps....i've been going to the blog page just to make sure i haven't missed any emails. That's where I got the "numbers" msg earlier today. http://mechanicalmooc.wordpress.com/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hi all, emails will be out by 8 pm Eastern US on Mondays. Sorry, we're working across teams and timezones to pull this off, and all our principle team members have day jobs. We appreciate your patience. @maskmethod, Did you register at http://mechanicalmooc.org?

OpenStudy (strangefyr):

Thanks @MOOC-E ! That's very helpful. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@MOOC-E Honestly, I don't recall whether I registered or not but I feel I must have. I have received all the blog posts through 'Legalese' so far. I just haven't received the 'numbers' post. I just noticed that I received the 'Python - Week 1' email about half an hour ago. Thanks for the prompt responses!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@strangefyr thank for the link.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you received the week 1 e-mail, you did register. Good luck!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@MOOC-E Thanks for the well wishes and I feel confident that with the excellent course materials and the assistance of my fellow students I will succeed!!
