Because you know you are going at 1 mile a minute 60kmph divided by 60 which is the amount of minuets in an hour gives you number 1. The difference between 60 and 40 is 20.  20 multiplied by 1 is of course 20.
 $$60\div60=1$$ 
$$ 60-40=20   $$
$$ 20\times1=20$$
