Use the diagram to find sin X as a fraction in simplest form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, what is the sin function? What two sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um im not too sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SOHCAHTOA. Remember that for the rest of your life. ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sin = Opposite / Hypotenuse Cos = Adjacent / Hypotenuse Tan = Opposite / Adjacent You will use those a lot.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what? haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i still don't get it....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know what opposite and adjacent mean, relative to the angle, X, in the triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk if this is right: adjacent is 36 opposite is 60 and hypotenuse is 48 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're right about adjacent. The other two, you have mixed up. Opposite will always be the only side of the triangle that doesn't touch the angle you're looking at. The hypotenuse (in a right angle triangle) is always the side across from (not touching) the right angle. Also, the hypotenuse will *always* be the longest side.

sin: 48/60 cos: 36/60 tan: 48/36 is this correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! You've got the premise. The only issue is with how you've written it. Technically, the value of your angle (in degrees) is equal to sin(48/60), cos(36/60), or tan(48/36).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You know X = sin(48/60), all that's left is the question asks for a fraction in simplest form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I was thinking backward. It's not X = sin(4/5). It's sin X = 4/5. So yes, that is perfect.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankies!! ;D
