math expectation of a numerical sum

OpenStudy (kropot72):

A total.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A fair die is rolled 10 times. Find the math expectation of the numerical sum of the outcomes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This will take surely a lot of time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it does

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can u list the possible sums at first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10,11,12,...,36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now, u need to make a probability distribution TABLE( which will take too much time)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then calculate the EXPECTED MEAN.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why till 36?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maximum possible sum =10*6=60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh sorry its 60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (kropot72):

The expected value on one throw is the mean of the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 = 3.5. With ten rolls the expected numerical sum of the outcomes = 3.5 * 10 = 35

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess @kropot72 is very correct
