To calculate the position of an observation at a given percentile (y) with (n) data points sorted in ascending order the formula is Ly=(n+1)y/100 --- but if I have 12 data points and want the 75th percentile the answer should be 9 -- BUT when I use the formula above it gives me 9.75 -- so what gives??? when should I be using that formula?
