factor -7x^2+2x^3+4x-14

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

factor the GCF, x^2 from first two terms

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

factor the GCF, 2 from last two terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand that

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

-7x^2+2x^3+4x-14 factor the GCF, x^2 from first two terms : x^2(-7 + 2x) + 4x - 14 factor the GCF, 2 from last two terms : x^2(-7 + 2x) + 2(2x - 7)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

:) now do u see anything common ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

-7x^2+2x^3+4x-14 factor the GCF, x^2 from first two terms : x^2(-7 + 2x) + 4x - 14 factor the GCF, 2 from last two terms : x^2(-7 + 2x) + 2(2x - 7) x^2(2x - 7) + 2(2x - 7)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

can we factor (2x-7) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

why No ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

i see (2x-7) is common in both the terms hmm, we can pull it out, eh ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes we can factor

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

good :) factor it and see what u get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 2x^2(2x-7)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

you're almost correct ! let me show u hw to factor it :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

-7x^2+2x^3+4x-14 factor the GCF, x^2 from first two terms : x^2(-7 + 2x) + 4x - 14 factor the GCF, 2 from last two terms : x^2(-7 + 2x) + 2(2x - 7) x^2(2x - 7) + 2(2x - 7) factor (2x-7) : (2x-7)(x^2+2)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

x^2 remains in the first term 2 remains in the last term, so we should write that as (x^2+2), not 2x^2

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

so thats our final factored form : (2x-7)(x^2+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thanks

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
