astronomers use various forms of evidence to learn more about what early earth was like. what are two objects astronomers have used?

Astronomers use a telescope to collect information. By looking at other planets, or discovering the conditions prevalent during early earth, they can theorize about what early earth was like. I cannot think of any other object they would use to get this evidence. Perhaps computers to analyze the data?

Another object that was used a long time ago was a sextant to determine the position of a star.
