Greek Fire is one thing that the Byzantines were known for. It was an early form of napalm that they used to defend the empire against their enemies and many in the ancient world feared it. They had even created early grenades using the stuff by putting it inside small clay jars and then torching their enemies by lobbing those at them.

More peaceful inventions include advances in architecture (which can be seen in the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul today) and the arts with the huge number of icons that were made in the empire.
