I can't explain the second part because calculators vary. For the first part however, there are three important things you should be able to do: find the domain and range, find y for an x, recognize the characteristics of functions through practice. If you've mastered the last part, most graphing is easy, not only for regular polynomials but also for every other function you're familiar with.
