find the probability of rolling a sum of 12 with 2 dice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question is "how many ways can you roll a total of 12 on two dice?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

numbers are 1,2,3,4,5,6 you have two sets of them what combinations will add up to 12? (only 6+6) therefore, you have a 1/6 * 1/6 chance to get 12, as the chance of rolling a 6 on each die is 1/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no theres 4+2 3+3 2+4 5+1 6+0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

none of those add up to 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3+3 = 12?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay nvr mind

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought it was 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's not 1/6 though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6 is the number you need to roll on each die. you have 6 numbers on dice, so therefore you have a 1/6 chance to roll a 6. but you don't want 6, you want 12. so you need to roll a 1/6 chance twice. or in other words: 1/6 * 1/6

1/36
