I would say that the relationship between the gods and men depend on the time period, the religious background and the religion itself.
In ancient history, the relationship between gods and men was one of man serving the gods. They relied heavily on how pleased the gods were with them. If a god was pleased, it could mean the birth of a child or of a successfull harvest.
Some religions offered sacrifes to their gods to give thanks and to recieve blessings. This was a common practice with the ancient jewish religion.
