What is the definition of expanding a expression?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It means one of the terms outside is a common factor to the other terms So use it to multiply the other terms Eg. Expand 2(3x - 4y) = 2(3x) - 2(4y) = 6x - 8y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are u talking about the number outside the parentheses to multiply it to the number inside the parentheses

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(2x - 3y)(5x + 6y) = 2x(5x + 6y) - 3y(5x + 6y) = 10x^2 + 12xy - 15yx - 18y^2 = 10x^2 - 3xy - 18y^2 since xy = yx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well isnt it just simplifying without using the like terms rule???
