I need help with verifying the trig equation please! 1 + tan/ 1 + cot = tan

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You have 1+tan over 1+cot all on the left side

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can rewrite cot as 1/tan

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

to get this

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

1 + tan ---------- 1 + 1/tan

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

then you can multiply the whole fraction by tan/tan (which is essentially 1) and distribute only through the denominator to get this tan(1 + tan) --------------- tan + 1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

see what to do next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

next I would cancel out 1 + tan right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

exactly

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the 1+tan is the same as tan+1

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so they cancel

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay I understand this problem, thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

this is all the left side, the right side stays as tan

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
