While much more could be said about characteristics of literary texts, the remainder of this lesson focuses on three examples that allow you to see more clearly the road from ordinary language to poetry. Read (and enjoy) each text carefully. One text is a portion of a sermon; another is an excerpt from a short story. The third is a poem. As you read, look for ways in which each uses figurative language, imagery, and other characteristics of poetic language.
