This is a weird way to phrase a ratio, but maybe you can start by getting a common denominator for the two fractions: You might multiply 18x17 to get a common multiple that you can use in the denominator. 17/18 = ? / (18)(17) 19/17 = ?? / (18)(17) Then you can more easily compare the parents' pay ratio. You don't have to start that way, but it might make it easier to see what is going on in the problem.
