It takes a boat 1.5 hours to go 12 miles downstream, and 6 hours to return. Find the speed of the boat in still water and the speed of the current.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

speed is distance divided by time (distance/time) The boat's speed is then 8 miles/hour downstream (12miles/1.5hrs) and 2 miles/hour upstream (12miles/6hrs). Does the question say anything else because it is pretty vague.

well that's the question the teacher assigned to us

Its a little silly because still water implies that the water isn't moving...but apparently there is a current. I think the question has too little information. Is the boat propelling itself?
