Simplify: |2(5)-8|= ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|2(5)-8|= |10-8|= 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2*5 = 10 10 - 8 is 2 so it would be |2| all the || means, is the distance to zero of whatever number is in the || for instance, |2| is 2 away from zero, obviously. 0,1,2 however, |-2| is also 2 away from zero. -2, -1, 0 so another way to think about it is the || sign will make whatever number is inside positive, as distances must always be positive. Therefore, |2| is just 2.
