Is Kronecker delta just a mathematical definition or does it a bigger meaning?
What do you mean by "bigger meaning"? Do you mean does it have application? If so, yes. Wikipedia even states it. It's used in digital signal processing. Or do you mean are there more mathematical implications from it? There's a few. One of them is the Zak Transform. Another idea that is very similar is the discrete metric. There's quite a bit of research done into it. I couldn't really explain it to you though. Most of it goes above me. But, it's not a trivial definition. There's many uses for it.
Yes I was thinking more about the second interpretation you gave, but not that I wanted a detailed explanation, because its quite above me also, was just trying to understand the basic.
Well, it's not really my area of interest, so I don't know too much about it. I can't even recommend any reading on it really. Someone else might be able to though. All I can say is yes, it's a very useful function.
It's ok, that was what I wanted to know, because when I first saw it, it seemed kind of arbitraty.
