apples are collected in a basket for six people. One third, one fourth, one eighth, and one fifth of the apples are given to four people, respectively. The fifth person gets 10 apples with one apple remaining for the sixth person. find the original number of apples in the basket.

OpenStudy (hana88):

please respond

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

We know the first four people have 109/120 of the apples. This is because 1/3+1/4+1/8+1/5 = 109/120

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

the fith person gets 10 apples, and the 6th gets one. If you look at the numerator, you can see that 11 (which is 10 apples + 1 to the 6th person) are missing to get 120/120. Thus, we can say that 120 apples were in the original basket
