Why was the basin system of irrigation largely abandoned by farmers near the Nile River in modern times? Answer The basin system only allows the planting of one main crop. The basin system is less dependent on the Nile flood. The basin system was developed thousands of years ago. The basin system is no longer effective in places like Egypt and northern Sudan.
