Is statistics a part of mathematics? Why do some curricula hold it as a different branch of mathematics?

There various different branches of matehmatics. The two major ones are Pure Mathematics and Statistical Mathematics. Within Pure Mathematics, there are even more branches. The different classifications is just to segregate them so that it is more specific. It's like you differentiate algebra with calculus and again with differential equation. You even differentiate linear algebra with nonlinear algebra or complex algebra

Think about it: Statistics deals with the distribution of numerical data, but numerical data is mathematics, right? Also, different curricula have different levels of statistics. So what do you think the answer is?
