solve for M means it will look like: M = stuff here there should be nothing on the same side as the M, except the M.

No , that is right. I just checked it in the back of the book.
well the answer is as follows: y = mx + b y - b = mx (y-b)/x = m notice m is on one side, and everything is on the other.
well... either you posted the incorrect question or the back of the book is wrong. cause i can gurantee that after you solve for m you won't have that answer
