what are cytolysis and plasmolysis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cytolysis is a cell death which occurs as the result of a rupture in the cell's membrane. When a cell experiences cytolysis, it bursts, scattering its contents in the process

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plasmolysis is the shrinking of the cytoplasm of a plant cell due to the diffusion of water out of the cell into a hypertonic solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

~Cytolysis (osmotic lysis), occurs when a cell bursts due to osmotic imbalance cause excess water to move into the cell. ~occurs in a hypotonic environment, where water moves into the cell by osmosis and causes its volume to increase to the point where the volume exceeds the membrane's capacity and the cell bursts. The presence of a cell wall prevents the membrane from bursting, ~only occurs in animal and protozoa cells which do not have cell walls. ~Plasmolysis is when a cell shrinks due to water leaving.
