the measures of the 3 sides of of a triangle can be represented by the algebraic expressions x,3x-1, and 4x+2. the perimeter of the triangle is 81 inches. what are the lengths of the sides of the triangle?

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

What part of this problem is giving you difficulty? (setting up the equation, simplifying it, solving it?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just how do you do it..so i guess how you solve it/ set it up? (:

OpenStudy (mathteacher1729):

Ok. So permiter = "the sum of all the side lengths." If you want to find the perimeter of the triangle you must add up all three sides. side1 + side2 + side3 = perimeter x+ 3x-1 + 4x+2 = 81 Do you understand how I got that equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1350160792761:dw| all those equations added together or summed must equal the perimeter which is 81. Then you combine like terms and solve for x.
