I'm not sure where amino acids get there name, but they aren't normally acids, that would depend on their surroundings and also what their R group is, if you look at the structure of an amino acid, it has a carboxylic acid group on one end and an amine group on the other end, which if place in acidic or alkali conditions can change|dw:1350191237655:dw| or rather react with either the hydroxide or hydrogen ions forming ions
