From what I can gather, there's no "utility" to subscribing. Subscribing is just a way to donate to the site. It's purely voluntary, and the purpose of it is to support them monetarily.
The things you get out of it, a title and a different shape for your smartscore, are purely cosmetic, except for the fact that they display your support for the site.

I actually like the system, and I've seen it work well for other free websites. People who are happy with how the site is being run should consider subscribing.

I don't feel like digging into the payments system to figure out how many people have subscribed at the moment. That said, in terms of utility - it's a way to help support the site if you like it, as SmoothMath said. We'll still probably delete your posts if they violate the CoC, however.
