Add/Subtraction Method for equations. How do I know if I add or subtract for the equation. Like: x+y=7 x-y=3 ? Do I add or subtract?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you add

But, how do I know I add?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you add them like if they were just like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it doesnt make a difference whether you add or subtract, if you add you get 2x=10 if you subtract, you get 2y=4. u can do either

OpenStudy (hba):

Ok Dude Its Easy To Understand When To Add And When To Subract Now See THe Equations You Have Got, You Need To Get the Value Of X Or Y Thats The Only Reason You Have To Add Or Subract, When You See Your Question You Have To Add, Now A Question Arises Why Do I Add,The Answer Is Because You Will Get X And Eliminate Y By Adding

OpenStudy (hba):

But In This Case Either You Add Or Subtract Doesn't Make A huge Difference Because Its Easy To Get X And Y,If You Add You Get X First,If you Subtract You Get Y First :)

OpenStudy (hba):

@lostandconfused1 Actually Maths Needs Alot Of Practice,As Soon As You Start Practicing A Lot Of Questions You Will Understand How It Goes :)

(Addition and subtraction are really the same thing in Algebra. Subtraction is merely the addition of the opposite. You add in such a way that one of the variables cancels out.
