solve the equation and check the solution -4(T-6)-(T+7)=7 This is how I worked it out: -4(T-6)-(T+7)=7 -4T-24-T+7=7 -11T+17=7 I think I should have -7 from each side, but not sure how.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here ill show you get ride of all that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4(T-6)-(T+7)=7 ok, distribute --> -4T + 24 - T - 7 = 7 combine like terms --> -5T + 17 = 7 subtract 17 over -5T = 10 divide by -5 and what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is 10 / -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, just all the negative and positive signs get me all confused, lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

negative * negative = positive Negative * Positive = Negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does it matter how large the number to determine the sign. For example: -17 + 5. because 17 is a larger number would that make it negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you think -17 + 5 is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it would be -12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would -17 - 5 = 22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no -17 - 5 is -22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are ubtracting a positive number, to a negative so it becomes bigger on the negative side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-17-(-5) would be what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-85

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no -12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so basically I should use the sign of the larger number correct?
