You read the first 100 words in a book. You randomly pick one of them. What is the probability the word starts with a vowel and has more than four letters?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

are the letters of the words in the book random?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

are you really sure this is the full question? seems to have some important details misisng

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now that you say so, they directions are read the first 100 words in a book. count the number of words that satisfy each of the events below. so i just count how many or do i have to generate a probabilty of assumed words? it seem too simple.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or do i do 1/100 * 5/26 * ? = probability?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*Facepalm* Now I see. Just take an example and count....

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

1/100 is the probability that a word is something...

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

is that your probability the first word is four letters?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe the directions are for example take ten words: The cat jumped over the moon and ran far away. (three begin with vowels and one is over four words)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So lets say i did that and they are both independent, how would i generate a probability from that?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i honestly cannot imagine this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3/10*1/10= the probability?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

what is 10 for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 10 words

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

is that sentence included in the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is an example im using to help you imagine it. 10 words instead of 100.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

but is the sentence included in the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

then you can't and shouldn't use that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The diretions are to read 100 words but im giving you 10 words instead in order to understand the formula needed for when i do the 100 words.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

you just picked random words...that shouldn't represent the 100 words

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I know that it would'nt represent it propery. But let's say I already ready those 100 words and 40/100 of them are vowel and another 50/100 are over four words. MY QUESTION IS: What do I do once I get that information??

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

oh. you should'be said that clearly from the start...

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

multiply 50/100 and 40/100

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

remember if it says *and* you multiply... if it's *or* you add in your case.. first letter is vowel *and* four letters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH! So or=add and and=multiply!!!! THANK YOU.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

welcome
