Fred throws a ball using h=-16t^2+10t+8 How long is the ball in the air??? Pleaseeeee show steps! :)

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

is this for a pre-calculus class?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-16t^2+10t+8 = 0 Solve for t :

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i think they should tell if it goes upward or down...

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

@maherman97 http://screencast.com/t/5PNbLyyXIBo If you solve for t, you will find the two intercepts, the furthest positive one will be equal to the total flight time of the ball.

Can I find this with a graphing calculator?

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

yeah. you can find this on a graphing calculator very easily.

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

If you are using a TI, just throw the function into your y= operator and hit 2nd trace/calc and find the positive x intercept using the command called "zero". All you have to do is hit a left bound and a right bound (on either side of the axis) then take a guess where you think the intercept is, and it will calculate it for you!
