So the quadratic formula is ax^2+bx+c=0. so first you need to fix your equation to fit that form so it will look like this 3x^2-5x-1=0. Then you need to use this formula -b+or- sqrt(b^2-4ac)/2a So in your case a is 3 b is -5 and c is -1 so when you plug it in it will look like this -5+ or - the sqrt(25-4(3)(-1))/6 Then just solve it from there
