say you work 11 hours a day and get paid 8 dollars per hour. You make 88 dollars a day.
you get a .40 $ raise and want to know how much you'll be making per day with the raise:

11 hours ( 8 dollars/hour + .40 dollars/hour)

you could add the terms inside the brackets and then do the multiplication, but if you're doing it in your head, you can do it easily with the distributive property:
11*8 + 11*.4
=88 +4.4
