we can use the term horizontal gene transfer (in the case of prokaryotes it is mainly by methods like transformation, transduction, conjugation and through gene transfer agents) here.
#Anyway none of these are actually 'exchange' because in most cases materials are passing from one (donor) to another (recipient) but nothing in return happening (for the donor).

# is my view only. Some of the text books also using the term exchange while describing these things. Anyone having more ideas about this please share
