It's based on experiment. That is, every proposition or hypothesis made can be tested by experiment. This is why history is not a science, but anthropology is. You can do an experiment to determine whether A. africans evolved before or after H. habilus, but you cannot do an experiment to see whether the absence of Stuart's cavalry is what caused Lee to lose at Gettysburg.

Actually, I guess my example is more archaeology than anthropology.
