what is 9+6x=6x+5

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

any idea how to start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

make the x's by itself.

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

yeah correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no don't do that, think first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got -4 but i dont know if its right.

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

or not listen to satellite :P

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

that wouldn't be the first step, but you see where it's going.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hanniepantie that is the right approach for lots of problems, such as the last one we worked... but @satellite73 will help you see why you have to think first before starting down that path :) Good luck!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are a human being not an equation solving machine we don't know what \(x\) but whatever it is on the left, it is the same as the (x\) on the right consequently the \(6x\) on the left is the same as the \(6x\) on the right. now, is it possible to add 9 to a number, and also add 5 to that same number, and get the same answer? unlikely, isn't it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thats why i'm confused!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of course, this question was designed by some math teacher to confuse you don't bite say "look, there is no way i can solve this!"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is there really no way to solve it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no chance for \[6x+9=6x+5\] or for \[2x-3=2x+1\] etc no solutions exist

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i thought so! thankyou

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can try if you like, you will get something silly like \[9=5\] which is of course nonsense. if you follow the rules blindly you could subtract \(6x\) from both sides and then get \[9=5\]
